The Client

Our client is an established MEP contractor with a strong reputation for delivering major, technically challenging building services projects across London and the Southeast.

Working alongside leading Tier 1 main contractors, the business has an excellent track record of delivering complex mechanical and electrical installations across major commercial developments.

With a strong pipeline of secured projects, they offer excellent opportunities for career progression and the chance to work as part of an experienced engineering and project delivery team.

The Project

We are currently recruiting for a Mechanical Project Engineer to join the delivery team on a major commercial development in Central London.

The project involves the delivery of a substantial mechanical services package, requiring detailed technical coordination, design management, procurement and installation planning.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Mechanical Project Manager and wider project team, supporting the delivery of mechanical services from the design and pre-construction stages through to installation, commissioning and final handover.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer looking to gain further exposure to major commercial projects and progress towards a senior engineering or project management position.

The Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating the technical, design and procurement elements of the mechanical package, ensuring the project is delivered in accordance with the agreed programme, specification, budget and quality standards.

Working closely with the Project Manager, design consultants, subcontractors and site management team, you will play an integral role in ensuring the successful delivery of the mechanical installation.

The position requires a technically capable engineer who can take ownership of engineering activities, resolve design and coordination challenges and support the effective management of subcontractors and specialist suppliers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate the development of mechanical services design, ensuring compliance with the project specification, building regulations, relevant standards and contractual requirements.
  • Liaise with design consultants, specialist subcontractors and the wider MEP team to resolve technical queries, design clashes and installation challenges.
  • Review and manage mechanical technical submittals, material approvals, equipment selections, builders` work requirements and coordinated drawings.
  • Assist in the preparation and management of mechanical procurement schedules, ensuring plant, equipment and materials are ordered in accordance with the project programme.
  • Coordinate procurement and technical requirements for major mechanical plant and equipment, including HVAC systems, heating and cooling plant, ventilation, pipework and associated building services.
  • Support the Mechanical Project Manager in developing and monitoring installation programmes, identifying potential delays and implementing corrective actions.
  • Attend design coordination, technical, progress and subcontractor meetings, ensuring relevant information and actions are communicated to the project team.
  • Manage technical RFIs, design changes and engineering queries, ensuring accurate records are maintained and information is issued in a timely manner.
  • Work closely with the commercial team to identify variations, monitor procurement costs and support the commercial management of the mechanical package.
  • Coordinate mechanical subcontractors and specialist suppliers to ensure installations are completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with approved designs.
  • Monitor installation quality, ensuring compliance with project specifications, approved drawings and relevant quality assurance procedures.
  • Support the preparation and implementation of inspection and test plans, commissioning programmes and project handover documentation.
  • Assist with commissioning, testing, snagging and final handover, ensuring all mechanical systems are completed to the required standards.
  • Ensure all engineering and installation activities comply with relevant health and safety legislation, CDM requirements and project-specific procedures.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Previous experience working as a Mechanical Project Engineer, Mechanical Site Engineer or Mechanical Design Engineer within an MEP contracting environment.
  • Experience working on major commercial construction projects, ideally with substantial mechanical services packages.
  • Strong technical knowledge of mechanical building services, including HVAC, heating, cooling, ventilation, pipework and associated plant installations.
  • Experience coordinating mechanical design, technical submissions, procurement and installation activities.
  • A good understanding of construction programmes, project sequencing and the coordination of multiple subcontractors.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, specifications and technical documentation.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary project team.
  • A relevant qualification in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering, ideally HNC/HND or degree level.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to manage technical challenges within a fast-paced construction environment.
