What did you do before joining Michael Taylor Search & Selection?
Before joining Michael Taylor, I worked at a large recruitment company, spending two years specialising in executive appointments for principal contractors in London. That was my first full-time role out of school. During my school years, I worked as a lifeguard, but for some reason never made the cut for Baywatch.
Why did you join Michael Taylor Search & Selection?
My main motivation for joining Michael Taylor was gaining industry knowledge. The team I joined has over 30 years of combined experience in building services recruitment. I was keen to pick up some of the useful (and useless) industry and technical knowledge they were able to share with me.
What do you most love about working in recruitment?
I never go to bed on Sundays dreading work.
Our sector specialises in matching candidates with clients. I feel real satisfaction from sitting down with people, discussing their careers, hearing what they are hoping to do next, and matching them up with ideal clients or vacancies.
On the other side, I equally enjoy meeting clients in need of very specific candidates, discussing the exact requirements, and shortlisting individuals. There’s nothing like the gratification of finding perfect matches.
The truth is, most of us spend a third of our lives at work. If you can improve a candidate’s career or a client’s work, then you improve their quality of life – that’s a great feeling.
What do you love most about Michael Taylor Search & Selection?
For me, the company provides excellent leadership. I never feel micromanaged but I always have support when I need it. I have the autonomy to run my client and candidate base in the way I see fit, with various levels of support and integration where necessary. We each have the tools to become more successful every day, from training schemes for entry-level colleagues to day-to-day coaching that helps new hires develop quickly.
What is your typical work week like?
Monday morning always starts with a recap of the previous week over coffee. Next, we create a plan and goals for the current week, including setting up client and candidate meetings. At lunch, we all try to leave the office – there are lots of great restaurants nearby. We have company gym memberships too, which I try to make the most of. On Thursdays, we play five-a-side football at lunch. Once a month, we hit a pub for team drinks and discuss overall business performance for the month. Fridays are always work-from-home days, which start with various training platforms and wind up for the week in the afternoon.
