Skills Required

Senior Design Engineer

• To be able to carry out competent designs in accordance with standards and guidelines
• To prepare drawings (either cad/hand drawn) to allow installation
• To be able to carry out calculations in CYMAP
• To prepare full tenders for design and build projects and pre-designed
• To present tender for adjudication by Directors providing all labour/material/prelim analysis
• To complete Tender analysis forms as requested by Design Manager
• To produce accurate and concise tender letters
• To chase tendered work and report outcome to Managers
• To identify training requirements to allow engineering role to continue accurately
• To assist with training of apprentices
• To assist contracts team during project installations
• To carry out tasks complying with Company Management Policy and Quality Systems
• To attend design meetings maintaining communication levels with all design team
• To identify design risks whilst carrying out design and inform the design team

People Skills

• Ability to delegate tasks identifying staff skills and capabilities
• To provide sufficient encouragement to enhance staff morale and provide motivation
• To encourage and instigate a good team ethos of working collaboratively.

Commercial Skills

• To demonstrate good understanding of business financial requirements and constraints
• To demonstrate good understanding of discounts, job cost etc.
• To produce accurate and concise tender letters

Personal Skills

• To make and apply decisions and communicate them to the design team/individuals
• To manage time and tasks to ensure efficient running of projects and department
• To form, build and maintain relationships with clients, suppliers and subcontractors
• To apply good man management skills to oversee and develop the design/estimating team
• To present all correspondence, tenders, drawings in a professional manner
• To prepare, run and attend all types of meeting including presentation, taking minutes etc.

Design

• Overall capabilities to produce and work with designs
• Ability to recognise and cost VE items
• Ability to carry out design calculations
• Meeting client / contract requirement deadlines
• Understanding of mechanical systems
• To provide detailed info for in-house / external organisations
• To be able to carry out calculations in CYMAP

Estimating

• Ability to demonstrate understanding of tender / projects
• To provide tender breakdown in logical format
• To be able to check / assist others when required
• To provide accurate and concise information
• Ability to provide accurate budget costs
• Meet tender deadlines
• Overall understanding and use of Estimation software
• Complete tender analysis on all projects
• Complete Estimate register information for all projects
